Our first R&D Laboratory at Marksans Pharma plant was set up in the state of Goa, which is instrumental in drug delivery and new formulation development. In 2005, a new R&D unit largely focused on innovation in the area of new molecule and drug delivery systems was made operational at New Delhi to work on projects in drug discovery. This new R&D unit offers space for world-class, new to the world pharmaceutical research. This unit is for new drug discovery chemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology/ molecular biology, toxicology, and related skills and support areas.

The Marksans R&D Laboratory, New Delhi marks a new era of scientific advancement in the field of drug discovery. This R&D unit's urgent mission is to discover new drug entity.The state-of-the-art Marksans R&D Laboratory will triple Marksans current research capabilities and provide much-needed quarters to educate and train the next generation of research scientists. In view of the growing importance of captive access to cutting edge research, Marksans invested heavily in a state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure and competencies in 2005.

It Currently Houses
	A team of scientists who are from IITs, AIIMS and different research institute, many of them are engaged in drug discovery, drug delivery systems, process development and analytical research.
	Modern scientific equipments to carry out drug discovery as per National / International standards and regulations.

Research & Development activities play a vital part in maintaining Marksans market position through Developrnent and subsequent commercial scale ups of new products. Research & Developrnent at Marksans is making a major contribution to strengthen corporate competitiveness by concentrating on product value addition and technological prowess. It also provides technical support to the export markets.

At Marksans, we are committed to do worldclass research that develops innovative medicines. This focus incorporates both a respect for resources and the manner in which resources are committed to specific, defined projects with timelines. The Marksans scientists do represent at various national / intemational seminars and meetings to present the results of in-house research efforts. Publication of results of in-house research in peer-reviewed intemational joumals also occurs on a regular basis.

	Gearing towards the development of drugs going off patent by 2008.
	API's for Post patent products to be developed in-house to give a competitive edge.
	Identified Cardiovascular, Diabetes, and Neuroscience, as area of interest for Post Patent filing.
	MPL also collaborates with its partners for development of drugs which are going Off Patent.
	MPL is already working on two NCE,s in collaboration with Original patent holders, one based in UK and the other in India (along with Indian council of Medical research, Govt. of India).
	Marksans has established itself as a Brand for itself in developing Soft Gelatin Capsules.

Due to structural changes in market place post 2005, MPL recognizes the need to possess intellectual property rights and brands for growth.

R&D Skills
The Research and Development Centre is active in almost all facets of the business which include:
	Development of new chemical entities/ drug.
	Pharmaceutical formulations development including Novel Drug Delivery Systems.
	Clinical trial Phase I - Pharmacokinetics (Bioavailability / Bioequivalence / Drug Metabolisrn Studies).
	Innovative process development for Bulk Actives.

The activities are well synchronized to provide Marksans a competitive advantage in the new patent regime. Over a period, the company has ambitious plans to further expand the research activities.
